article: MMA Star Gina Carano on her First Acting Gig for Steven Soderbergh

Posted by: p0d on June 15, 2011

In the summer of 2009, after losing the first fight of her career, Gina Carano, a professional mixed martial artist, considered throwing in the towel. But at her agent’s insistence, the 29-year-old Texan agreed to meet with a director named Steven Soderbergh. “I had a black eye, and I didn’t want to see anyone,” she says. “Especially not a director who, I’m embarrassed to say, I hadn’t heard of before. He wanted to make a movie based on a female action person—‘star’ feels too weird to say—who would make these Hollywood stage fights look believable.”

another Co-star quote: Channing Tatum on Gina Carano

.  At first, Tatum didn’t like the idea  of being in a female (led) action movie. “I said (to my wife) find a girl who could whoop up on me…and they did. She’s great. For somebody that’s never acted before, she seemed like she had. She worked really hard. (click here for video interview including notes on Haywire) . According to director Steven Soderbergh, Gina Carano’s feature film debut ‘Haywire’ is opening in theaters on April 22, 2011. The confirmation and other notes about the film were revealed when the acclaimed director made a recent guest appearance on a podcast hosted by NFL analyst Rich Eisen, who had great praise for the film. Soderbergh: -”She (Gina Carano) was fantastic… really great.” -”We’ve gone back and done a little more work (editing) since June.” -”There were a couple of people (actors) that were not comfortable being beat by a woman.. (Eisen then affirms the action) there’s a hotel suite scene… that was alot of fun.” @ 01:36:42 – http://richeisen.nfl.com/2011/01/05/wildcard-podcast-sir-charles-barkley-urban-meyer-steven-soderbergh/ -source: The Playlist -editor’s note this article orignally posted 01/08/11 –  updated credit: JChap & Sarah

Co-Star quote: Michael Douglas on Gina Carano’s action scenes in Haywire

Posted by: p0d on October 5, 2010

Michael Douglas recently reunited with Traffic director Steven Soderbergh for Haywire, an action film in which he plays a CIA agent alongside real-life martial arts fighter Gina Carano. “It’s a little scary when you’re doing a scene with her,” he says. “My God, the fight scenes are … she beats the sh*t out of these guys. It’s like the real thing.”   source: News.Scotsman.com  (credit: Kej21) The venerable actor supports the Stand Up 2 Cancer organization as he is currently undergoing treatment for stage 4 throat cancer. We send our hope for all the ‘fighters’ of this disease.   Stand Up To Cancer is a new initiative created to accelerate groundbreaking cancer research that will get new therapies to patients quickly and save lives. Profile: Fight Choreographer of ‘HAYWIRE’ – J.J. Perry (*exclusive film notes included)

Posted by: p0d on September 22, 2010

J.J. ‘Loco’ Perry is an elite U.S Army veteran who has been practicing martial arts for over 30 years, as well as having been a successful competitor. He has witnessed first hand, the world go from TMA (traditional martial arts) to MMA. In his award winning stunt career (2003 Taurus Award winning) he has both worked and trained with a pantheon of martial arts icons, from Chuck Norris & Jet Li to Tony Jaa, Scott Adkins, MMA Legend Randy Couture and many, many more. Recently, he’s been directed by James Cameron in the biggest film in history, ‘Avatar’ and now by Steven Soderbergh in ’Haywire’. (Click for original pic)  -introduction: promo for Wolverine:Origins -the man behind the action -handling his business: SubZero   -Gina Carano was “amazing…exceptional with the choreography, and a pleasure to work with”. -Due to her physical prowess, there was no traditionally extensive need for stunt doubling. Her ability can be considered among the upper echelon of stunt performers in the business due to her martial arts/athletic base. -Along with her angelic smile, she possesses an immaculate, right roundhouse kick. -The Playlist.com report of Carano accidentally knocking out a stunt coordinator in practice sessions was responded with a laughter accompanying, “No comment.” -In regards to that same top film site reporting that several unnamed, male action stars declined participation due to the prospect of being dominated by a female, while also in a supporting role, the renowned stuntman spoke particularly well of leading action and dramatic actor, Channing Tatum, one of Carano’s co-stars in the film. -Fans can look forward to not seeing the usage of frenetic and obscured viewing angles (a la The Bourne Supremacy) either due to filming style or the actor’s limitations. -They also shouldn’t expect to see the over-the-top maneuvers (“flips, hurrican-ranas, etc.”) seen in other action films. Haywire is “violent and gritty”…emphasizing environment interaction. -J.J. had a message for new martial artists, including those inspired by Carano – “There’s no end to the journey of finding one’s self through martial arts, and that journey must include great challenges…testing one’s self to the fullest.” (*editor’s note:  Gina-Carano.org extends much thanks to J.J. Perry. We wish ‘Loco’ continued success in his prolific career. Also, thanks to the fans who submitted questions months ago. Out of respect for privacy and professional courtesy, a much more detailed interview was honorably declined.)

‘Haywire’ co-Star quotes: Michael Douglas, Channing Tatum, and Michael Fassbender on Gina Carano

Posted by: p0d on May 24, 2010

“..Steven (Soderbergh) has discovered this Gina Carano who’s an ultimate fighter. She’s one of these ultimate fighters. She’s quite attractive and I think in the spirit of a super-action-Bruce Lee-as-a-leading-lady in a good story that he’s built around, but with action scenes that you don’t cutaway from. She gives as good as it takes. It’s a little disturbing to see a lady get hit in the mouth right on camera and then come back. It was pretty good… ( ManhattanMovieMag.com – 05/22)   “I did a Steven Soderbergh movie with mixed martial artist Gina Carano – she’s amazing.” (belfasttelegraph.co.uk – 03/31)       “She’s a cagefighter. She’s this Muay Thai expert amazing fighter, and very very pretty too. I checked her out on YouTube, and it’s like, holy sh*t.“ source: Cinemablend.com credit: Amber Rae
