Your gameplan for Gina on how to beat Cyborg
« on: February 22, 2009, 03:22:16 PM »
Let's pretend for a minute that you're Gina's head coach. What kind of fight strategy/plan would you devise for her to beat Christiana Cyborg?

Be specific as you can.

In MMA, you get trained to "read" your opponents body language, so I would tell her to keep focusing on Cyborg (keep looking her straight in the eye), and determine her next move. Not as easy as it sounds, but very effective. That's the stand up game. Don't try to chase things along, rather take some time, and don't use up too much strength at once... Pace yourself. That's about all I can say. Each fight and fighter is unique, so you won't be able to work out a step by step plan. The best thing you can do is just go in mentally and physically prepared, and never underestimate your opponent.

My advice is to keep distance, find the angles, and counter punch with lots straights.

Cyborg is very agressive and wings hard left and right hooks which will overwhelm most opponents if the opponent decides to stand there and brawl it out with her. She is very similar to Wanderlei Silva in that way. It worked for Crocop against Wanderlei and I think it could work for Gina as well because she can stick and move very well and has very good footwork, which was evident in her last fight with Kobold. I don't know how Cyborg's conditioning was since they didnt televise her last fight that went the distance. All I know is Gina doesn't tire that much so she can let Cyborg chase her around and wing all those punches and connect with counterpunches as she's comin in and hopefully she can tire her out in that way.

I would tell her to avoid the clinch and avoid the ground if she can't get top position. Though I hate to admit it, Cyborg can probably do more damage in the clinch than Gina can to Cyborg. Also i think Cyborg has better ground and pound as well and i dont think Gina can submit her.

i think she needs to play smart and on defense...let cyborg make the first move and try to counter it or make her miss and strike cyborg

Gina just has to keep it a stand up game. She is the best at that... But she is also the best when she is right on top punching the crap out of the girl... She just needs to stay focus on her game. And not get pulled into Cyboeg's game. But this is the only fight I'm scared of...

Gina seems to have her head on straight, so I'm pretty sure she'll prepare herself as necessary. She knows what she needs to do.

Just like everyone else, I can't wait for this fight to take place. It's definitively going to be one of the biggest events in MMA this year, and hopefully at least one of us here will get to go watch it live.  ;)

That would be sick if we all went as a group... and we were able to meet Gina after the fight!

Hell yeah! Maybe if everyone gets their dedications to Gina to me and I can get the video off to her, she might feel like "rewarding" us that way, haha!

That would be pretty sweet. Some backstage passes would be nice too!
