It was definitely an intense match to watch, that's for sure.  They are both incredible athletes and should be proud of what they have done for women's mma.  The sport will only grow bigger, and hopefully there is a rematch in the future.  I had a feeling before watching the match that Cris might win, only because she is a beast, but in a good way, and in mma being a beast helps sometimes.  Also, as focused as Gina looked, there was that time away from the ring and all the pressure as well.  I'm curious, as I'm sure most people are, as to what would have happened had it gone into another round.  Could Gina have taken what she experienced in that first round and used it to somehow change how the match was going, or would Cyborg's constant attack have continued on with no sign of her getting tired.  But that's mma for you, and it definitely left me with a lot on my mind.

Afternoon all,
Gina put up a good effort, but that's how it goes when you test yourself against another person, you win some you loose some.

Gina is a woman of courage and spirit, so in time, she we recover from this set back and move on. If this is the worst thing that happens to her in her life then she's doing all right.

Best wishes,
David

In my opinion, if the fight had gone into the second round, Gina would have gone in more furiously, knowing that Cyborg wasn't going to take this thing lying down... Maybe she needed to feel her out first, but alas it was too late for that. Also the fact that Gina hasn't been in the cage in such a long time, I believe that made the difference. I'm sure Gina would have come back stronger in the second round... Sometimes it takes a while to get back into the swing of things after such a long absence from the ring.

I just joined this site and just want to keep it positive for all of Gina's true fans.  She has the true heart and pride of a fighter and her charisma , beauty, and charm are the reason that womens mma is where it is now.  Nobody in the future of womens mma should ever forget what she did for the sport.  Gina has incredible skills but was just beat by a stronger, more skillful and aggressive fighter.  Cyborg is kind of like the female version of Anderson Silva at this point.  I hate to bring this up, but to keep it real, Cyborg has all the telltale signs of steroid use, which give her freaky strength and viscous aggressivenes that is difficult for a clean fighter like Gina to be able to match.  I doubt that if she is off a cycle it would show up in urine test anyway but Im sure there are other ways to test (hair folical-dna), I know women bodybuilders that juice that pass urine tests by goin off cycle.  Sorry, but if womens mma wants to move forward they need to do a better job of controling this.  After seeing Cyborg totally overpower the very talented Bazler, I knew Gina would be in for a rough fight.  She should be very proud for gettinf in the cage with Santos and she showed some good moves, ie good jabs, and powering out of the americana.  Also, just the courage not to tap when you are getting struck from leveraged postion by someone like Cyborg is amazing.  I love Gina and hope she is doing well, women like her are the future of the sport (I am not just talking about her looks) not juiced up "Cyborg" types, or at least I hope so or I will no longer watch.

What a fight !!! It was amazing ! From my point of view, the 2nd best fight of the year just behind Diego Sanchez Vs Clay Guida. I'm really pride of Gina's performance.
Her jab is so goog but Cyborg was so powerful, a little bit too much for Gina... Cristiane has the wanderlei style, she's very impressive. I just hope she doesn't use steroïd...
Nevertheless, I guess there will be a rematch one day. Technically, Gina is much better than Cyborg so, Tomorrow wil be another day.
Moreover all the great champs learn to loose one day. I guess it was Gina's turn but I admit I feel frustrated after the fight... Just 1 second to a second round. Who knows what would happened...
Gina is a champ, she will rise after this fight; I'm sure she learned more than all of her last fights.
Whatever, after this fight, I'm sure Gina won a lot of respect in MMA world.

The next Cyborg opponent seems to be Marloes Coenen.
She's from Netherlands.
Bastian, do you know her ?
She seems to be a good challenger and may be a future opponent to Gina...

Tyler D. happy to be here !  ;D

Folks, I think we should cull the steroid talk with regards to Cyborg.  Let Strikeforce and the athletic commissions do their job otherwise we look like douchebag homer fans.  We knew this was going to be a tough fight for Gina going in and it does her no justice by dragging in abusive talk about her opponent.  This is not the end, its only a set back for Gina.

Thanks for the welcome Phoenix.  I am sorry if I stepped over the bounds Krav, I am new here and appreciate the oppurtunity to be among Gina's true fans during a tough time.  I was saying the same thing after I saw the Bazler fight, and I feel if we as true MMA fans just ignore the elephant in the room we are doin a disservice to the sport and the truth. I however, out of respect of the innocent until proven guilty that guides are justice system will no longer flat out call her a juicer, but will say what I feel should be done.  I hope this an acceptable compromise to those who feel that flat out calling her a steroid user, although its blatantly obvious, is a disservice to Gina and other clean fighters.  It is just so flustrating to hear all the Gina haters calling her a barbie doll, and other such things that imply she is not a great fighter.  Gina has beaten some good fighters-Maxwell, Young, Kobold,... and haters say she beat a bunch of nobodies and it upsets me.  Gina had so much pressure on her Saturday night, and she was put in the cage with a woman with so much of a strength and aggresion advantage.  Can you imagine being Gina and knowing the overwhelming number of fans where rooting for you and expecting you to beat Cyborg and then looking accross the cage at that.  Gina is warrior and showed trmendous heart despite being obviously intimidated, after all lets remember she is just a normal human female with fears like the rest of us.

I too would've liked to see how the next round would've turned out, now that i think about it, cuz she would know what to expect that time around and could have countered her strategy

You're welcome MMAFan.  :)

Yeah, I honestly believe that had Gina gone into the second round she would have done a lot better. What's done is done, and there's nothing anyone can do about it. There's plenty of other fights for Gina.  :)

I really dont see there being much of a chance of a differnt result in a second fight unless Gina decides to make drastic changes to her body, which I pray she doesnt.  Gina and other fighters like her (Modafari, Bazler, etc) should refuse to fight Cyborgs, as it is totaly unfair.  If nothing is done, the entire sport will be full of Cyborg types and no one will watch.  As far as the fight being stopped, or what would have happened in the 2nd round, I am sorry to say it is immaterial because Gina was finished anyway.  After Cyborg landed the punch with 10 seconds left, she was standing and brought everything she had with a clear head shot, Gina curled up and was just about out.  I think the ref should have stepped in at that point!! And she took several more blows from the leveraged postion.  Even if Gina could have made it to corner and been ready to go in 60 seconds (she needed help from Doc to get up after about 30) and her incredible pride and spirit made her want to continue, and Randy and Tompkins would let her, there is no way that female doc after seeing the head shots Gina had taken would have put her back out there.  I love Gina, but there was going to be no second round, thankfully, it made me physically ill a the end of the 1st.  The appetite for mma fans like me of seeing great clean fighters, like Bazler and Gina getting manhandled by freaks like Cyborg will be very short lived.  I pray that Gina doesnt fight her again, I couldnt take seeing it.  Let Cyborg fight among her kind and Gina and the clean fighters fight each other, and see which fights people pay to see and watch on TV.

Memories, pictures of the fight still hurt me. I wince every time I see that picture of Gina getting punched at the home page. But it's her expression post fight that gets me the most.

When she lost, I felt as though something unjust had been done, like the world didn't make sense. But this isn't the end though, the story is far from over. When Gina gets back up, the world would make sense again.

I still think Cris Santos is beatable though. She relies too much on brute force to maul her opponents.

aiki, Yes it still hurts me also, but the end of the fight was alot worse.  Once she was up a felt alot better, even though you could see the bewildered and disappointed look on her face., I felt alot better that it was over and she appered to be ok and she wasnt knocked out completley.  I cant wait to hear from Gina, she should be proud of the courage she showed, although Im sure she is too hard on herself.  The problem with beating Santos is not only does she rely on brute force and aggression, she has great jujitsu, muay thai, and grappling skill.  Just dont see Gina beating her and I pray they never fight again.  Its not a fair fight!  Do you want to see that happen again or worse?
